Clevedon Saxons won promotion on Saturday with a thrilling win over local rivals Yatton, in a gripping derby.
Saxons led by Ollie Wilson and James Barzotelli, have secured promotion from the Tribute Somerset North 3 league, having only lost one game all season and have led the league since late November 2018. Nick Wilson, Manager, was proud as punch in his teams achivement and full of praise for the character, desire and performances put in by the team over the season. These lads capitalised from the previous season and remained together as a team which has been a motor attribute to their success, along with hard work and guidance from the coaches, Nick Hill and Neil Tucker,
John Pearse in his final game gave a positive and heart felt team talk prior to the game, where the lads responded immediatly and took control of the game from the whistle, with Aaron Mason breaking through Yatton’s defence for Ethan Thomas too kick sweetly from a tight angle.
For a long period the visitors were camped on Yatton’s 22, the home side did their best to frustrate the Saxons who couldn’t punch their way through, however Olly Barcham was simply too strong in the end and powered his way through with the next try. Ben ’the Coyoye' James was next to score with an epic run from the half way line, he simply could not be caught and end the game with a hatric of tries. Brad Lias was next to cross the line and at this stage the ref blew up for half time, where Clevedon were in front by 33 points, with a target not to let the hype get to them as this game simply had to be won so to secure the promotion.
The second half was a mirror image of the first, with another 33 points added, Sunny Barzotelli took over the role of scrum half from Barzotelli Snr, and further tries scored by James Grinstead, Pat Childs, Aaron Mason and show boater Ollie Wilson (pictured), with Ethan Thomas converting all bar one. All credit to Yatton, who never gave in, and where they collected themselves and did fight back, however a strong defensive display from Jack Williams, Rory McGuigan and Tom Williams kept the home side from scoring.
